The Blessed Virgin Mary is uniquely associated with Catholicism, and the century preceding the Second Vatican Council was arguably the most fertile era for Catholic Marian studies. In 1964, Pope John Paul VI published the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, or Lumen Gentium (LG), the eighth chapter of which presents the most comprehensive magisterial teaching on the Blessed Virgin Mary. As part of its Marian Initiative, the Institute for Church Life at the University of Notre Dame invited scholars to a conference held at Notre Dame in October 2013 to reflect the rich Marian legacy on the eve of the Second Vatican Council. The Hatter was the first to break the silence. 'What day of the month is it?' he said, turning to Alice: he had taken his watch out of his pocket, and was looking at it uneasily, shaking it every now and then, and holding it to his ear.

This witty and appealing pocket diary for 2022 pairs illustrations from Lewis Carroll's much-loved Alice's Adventures in Wonderland with objects from the rich collections of the V&A.
Victorian author Lewis Carroll had originally drawn his own illustrations for the first 'Alice' manuscript, but recognized the need to engage a professional artist, John Tenniel, for the published version. Carroll's text was often light on description, and Tenniel invented his own characterizations, drawing from a vast range of sources, including fine art, natural history, heraldry and caricature. Once committed to paper, the illustrations were carved into woodblocks by engravers, and electrotype copies made to be used by the publishers, Macmillan, for printing. The National Art Library at the V&A holds a copy from the year of first publication, 1866.
Plan your days alongside these iconic images and the wonderful selection of jewellery, prints, textiles, ceramics, glass and silverware from the V&A.
